Anna Browne came to Spokane Falls, W.T. with her husband John J. Browne, in 1878. She reared a large family in what is now Browne’s Addition in Spokane. As the city grew, so did the wealth and social prestige of the Browne family. Both J.J. Browne and Anna were prolific correspondents (see collection 21). John J. Browne was raised in Indiana and graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1868. Following several years work as attorney and superintendent of public schools in Oswego, KS, he opened a law office in Portland, OR, where he also served as superintendent of schools for Multnomah County.
